The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has said that the current crisis facing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not caused by defections or disloyalty, but by a clear lack of leadership within the party.
Speaking during a media engagement with Symfoni, Wike stressed that leadership is the backbone of any successful group—whether in politics, business, or other sectors. He argued that the PDP has continued to suffer because it has failed to provide the kind of leadership that unites and strengthens its members.
Referring to the defection of Delta State Governor’s political allies to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Wike questioned why such moves are being treated as betrayals. “What crime did he commit by choosing to support the President?” he asked, highlighting what he described as hypocrisy within the PDP. “The same people criticizing others for leaving the party were the ones openly supporting a Labour Party governor for a second term. Why is no one talking about that?”

Wike maintained that he had long warned his fellow PDP leaders about the dangers of ignoring internal issues. “I called some governors and told them what would happen. I said, ‘You people are not seeing the signs,’” he said. “Now they act like they didn’t see it coming.”
He criticized the party’s repeated attacks on him, saying, “Every day it’s Wike this, Wike that. Instead of facing the real problems, they are chasing shadows.”
He also dismissed claims that he betrayed the PDP during the last elections. “I didn’t support the presidential candidate, but I delivered my state 100% in the governorship, national, and state assembly elections,” he stated. “Let any sitting or former governor show such results.”
