The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party on Friday declared the leadership of Barrister Julius Abure as “untouchable,” reaffirming him as the legitimate National Chairman of the party and insisting that the courts have no jurisdiction over the internal affairs of political parties.
The declaration was made at the NEC meeting held at the party’s National Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, where members of the National Working Committee, national officers, state chairmen and secretaries, party stakeholders, co-opted NEC members, and INEC monitors were in attendance.
In its resolutions, NEC reviewed the controversies that followed the 2024 National Convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, as well as the numerous court cases and INEC’s position on the leadership crisis. Citing the Supreme Court judgment in Abegunde vs. Ondo State House of Assembly & Ors. (2025) LPELR-24588 (SC), the Council emphasized that issues of party leadership remain strictly internal matters that are not open to judicial interpretation.
NEC recalled the Supreme Court’s clarification that a political party is a corporate entity governed by its own constitution, rules, and guidelines which bind all members who voluntarily join the party. The court stressed that political parties must first exhaust their internal dispute resolution mechanisms and that disagreements over internal affairs are non-justiciable.
Following this reaffirmation, NEC validated all national officers elected at the March 27, 2024 National Convention in Anambra State. Those confirmed include: National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure; Deputy National Chairmen, Clement Ojukwu, Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, and Esther Gulmu; National Vice Chairmen Ibrahim Idoko (North Central), Ceekay Igarra (South East), and Anthony C. Ezeagwu (South South); National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim; Deputy National Secretaries Rotimi Kehinde Adekunle and Chief Innocent Okeke; National Treasurer, Mrs. Ngozi Doga; National Financial Secretary, Pastor Mrs. Dayo Ekong; National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Obiora Ifoh; National Organizing Secretary, Comrade Yahuza Ahmed; National Legal Adviser, Barr. Kehinde Edun; National Women Leader, Mrs. Dudu Manuga; and National Youth Leader, Prince Kennedy Ahanotu.
