Rivers State – Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, inaugurates the 7.3km Oyigbo Road in Rivers State and flags off the Mgboji-Umuagbu Akwete Road reconstruction, enhancing connectivity across the Niger Delta.
In a significant step toward enhancing road infrastructure in the Niger Delta, the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, has inaugurated the 7.3-kilometre Oyigbo Road network in Rivers State. The newly commissioned road spans several communities, including Obunku, Umuosi, Obeakpu, Mgboji, and Ndoki, in the Oyigbo Local Government Area.
Momoh also flagged off the reconstruction of the Mgboji-Umuagbu Akwete Road, a crucial link connecting Rivers, Abia, and Akwa Ibom states. The projects, spearheaded by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), aim to improve regional connectivity, enhance economic activities, and boost local development.
NDDC Commits to Regional Growth
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the minister commended the NDDC for its commitment to infrastructural development in the Niger Delta. He emphasized the commission’s role in fulfilling its mandate of fostering rapid progress in the region.
“This is yet another demonstration of the NDDC’s dedication to delivering projects that directly impact the lives of Niger Deltans,” Momoh stated. “Just last Saturday, the commission inaugurated the reconstructed Abraka-Oben Road in Delta State and commenced work on the Abraka-Agbor Road. This momentum must be sustained.”

His remarks were contained in a press release issued on Thursday by the NDDC Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama.
Addressing concerns about the NDDC Board’s dissolution, Momoh defended the leadership, affirming that the current management aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for infrastructural advancement.
“Those who disagreed with me for supporting this board now know better,” the minister said. “The NDDC must be allowed to work for Niger Deltans without unnecessary distractions. The Ministry of Regional Development firmly opposes disruptions, as the Commission is performing well under the President’s directives.”
He further called on the National Assembly to continue prioritizing the NDDC’s budget, ensuring seamless execution of developmental projects.
The NDDC Board Chairman, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, highlighted the significance of the Oyigbo Road project, describing it as a crucial infrastructure investment that will boost economic opportunities and improve the quality of life for residents.
“This road will enhance connectivity, making movement easier for residents, businesses, and industries,” Ebie said. “It is a testament to President Tinubu’s dedication to transforming the Niger Delta.”
Ebie also revealed that the NDDC Board and Management had adopted a new governance framework developed by KPMG to improve accountability and efficiency in project execution.
Similarly, NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, stressed the importance of strategic planning in executing development projects. He pointed out that the Oyigbo Road serves not only as a community link but also as a critical access route for industrial and energy stakeholders.
“This road facilitates better movement for international oil companies, the Independent Power Plant, and the Nigeria Gas Company,” Ogbuku explained. “It was awarded last year and aligns with the President’s directive to complete all ongoing initiatives.”
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC, Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong, assured continued legislative support for the commission, applauding its recent strides in infrastructure delivery.
“The National Assembly is ready to provide any necessary assistance to ensure the continued success of the NDDC,” Ekpeyong stated.
NDDC Executive Director of Projects, Victor Antai, underscored the broader socio-economic benefits of the newly constructed road, citing reduced travel time, improved farm produce transportation, and enhanced security in the region.

Echoing these sentiments, the Paramount Ruler of Umuosi, Eze Oscar Deya, expressed gratitude to the NDDC for restoring the once impassable Obunku-Ndoki Road. He urged the Commission to fast-track the completion of the Mgboji-Umuagbu Akwete Road, stressing its importance in further integrating the Niger Delta.
The inauguration of the Oyigbo Road and the launch of the Mgboji-Umuagbu Akwete Road reconstruction reinforce the Federal Government’s commitment to infrastructural development in the Niger Delta. As the NDDC continues to deliver impactful projects, residents and businesses can expect improved accessibility, enhanced trade opportunities, and sustainable economic growth in the region.
