The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched an investigation into the data processing activities of global e-commerce platform Temu over alleged violations of Nigeria’s data protection laws.
The directive was issued by the NDPC National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Vincent Olatunji, who ordered an immediate probe into Temu’s operations in the country.
According to the Commission, the investigation was triggered by growing concerns surrounding Temu’s handling of personal data. Key issues under scrutiny include possible online surveillance through personal data processing, failure to adhere to data minimisation requirements, lack of transparency, breach of duty of care, accountability concerns, and the legality of cross-border data transfers.
Preliminary findings by the NDPC indicate that Temu processes the personal information of approximately 12.7 million data subjects in Nigeria, while maintaining about 70 million daily active users globally.
The Commission warned that data processors who carry out processing activities on behalf of data controllers without verifying compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) may be held liable under the law.

The NDPC stated that the investigation forms part of its broader mandate to ensure that all organisations operating within Nigeria comply with established data protection standards and uphold the privacy rights of citizens.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine whether Temu has breached provisions of the NDP Act and what regulatory actions may follow.
