The Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has pledged to balance innovation with privacy protection as emerging technologies reshape the country’s digital landscape.
Speaking at the National Data Privacy Summit in Abuja on Wednesday, NDPC Commissioner Dr. Vincent Olatunji said:
“As we innovate, we must consider privacy and protection. We are growing at an alarming rate, and we are not afraid to take risks.”
Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), highlighted the promise of the Internet of Things (IoT) for Nigeria’s economy, while cautioning that emerging technologies also pose risks to personal rights.
“Balancing innovation with ethical safeguards and public trust ensures digital growth benefits all Nigerians without compromising privacy or security,” he said.
The summit also noted that telecom operators hold vast amounts of sensitive subscriber data, underscoring the importance of collaboration on privacy and security. Plateau State Commissioner Dr. Bako Shurkuk added that emerging technologies can drive sustainable growth if properly harnessed.
