The Acting National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has expressed deep regret over the leadership crisis rocking the party, describing the decision to accept Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary as a “painful compromise.”
Speaking during the party’s 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, Damagum admitted that internal disagreements had created tension and division in the party, but stressed that after wide consultations, the party resolved to forge ahead in unity — even if it meant making tough decisions.
“It was a painful decision, but we took it in the spirit of unity after meeting with governors and other party leaders,” Damagum said while addressing NEC members and the press.
The NEC meeting, contrary to rumors of collapse or chaos, held successfully with full attendance by PDP governors, National Assembly members, and members of the National Working Committee (NWC). The meeting was majorly to address the lingering leadership issues and plan for the party’s national convention.
Damagum confirmed that the decision to allow Senator Samuel Anyanwu continue in his role followed party consultations, despite the tension it generated.

“There was a belief that this meeting would be an extended caucus or end in crisis, but we are here, seated and united. This NEC is fully convened and legitimate,” he said.
He noted that the next NEC meeting, scheduled for July 23, will deliberate and issue a formal date for the PDP’s national convention, with all processes conducted lawfully and in accordance with INEC regulations.

In a strongly worded appeal to both party faithful and the media, Damagum warned against further attempts to discredit the party:
“Enough is enough! If you love this party, now is the time to promote its beauty and strength. Stop demarketing the party. Unless you’ve been contracted to destroy it, this is the time to stop.”
He called on all PDP supporters to focus on rebuilding unity, affirming that the party remains the most organized and democratic institution in Nigeria’s political space.
