Nigeria’s progress in data protection has positioned it as a continental leader, according to Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.
Speaking recently, the Minister confidently declared, “Nigeria currently has one of the best Data Protection Commissions in Africa,” highlighting the rapid growth and strengthening of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), as it rapidly gaining recognition for its role in safeguarding citizens’ personal data and enforcing digital privacy standards, under the administration of the CEO, Dr. Vincent Olatunji.
Dr. Tijani praised the Commission’s efforts under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, noting that Nigeria is becoming a reference point for other African countries. He emphasized that data protection is essential for building trust in digital systems, which is critical for the country’s tech-driven economic growth.

“Trust is the foundation of any digital economy. Without data protection, we cannot expect people or businesses to feel safe online,” Tijani said.
The NDPC, established to drive compliance with data protection regulations, has been active in creating awareness, guiding organizations, and holding violators accountable. Industry observers say the commission’s work is aligning Nigeria with global data privacy standards — a move that could attract more foreign investment and partnerships in the digital sector.
