Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani has been elected as Vice Chair of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council for the year 2025, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s global digital presence.
The ITU, a specialized agency of the United Nations, is responsible for issues concerning information and communication technologies (ICT). Tijani’s emergence as Vice Chair signals Nigeria’s growing influence in shaping global digital policies and connectivity standards.
Speaking after the election, Tijani expressed gratitude and declared, “Our voice will now shape the future of global connectivity.” He emphasized that this is not just a personal win, but a victory for Nigeria’s youth, innovators, and digital entrepreneurs.
“This recognition is a direct result of our strategic efforts to position Nigeria as a global digital powerhouse. Our work at home is being noticed-and now, we have a seat where decisions that impact the entire world are being made,” he added.
This Minister’s new position now places Nigeria in a leadership role on a council that determines how countries across the world connect, share data, and innovate in the digital space.
The Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy described the achievement as a “testament to Nigeria’s commitment to global digital transformation.” It also noted that Tijani’s position will enhance Nigeria’s ability to attract foreign investments, push innovative tech policies, and support youth-led digital enterprises.
This international recognition follows a series of initiatives by Tijani’s ministry to boost local tech talent, expand broadband coverage, and foster collaboration between the government and the private sector.
Nigeria’s seat at the ITU leadership table means more opportunities for the country’s tech ecosystem, more support for innovation, and more international visibility. It’s a bold step toward making Nigeria a key player in the global digital revolution.
