The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it will brief its organs before taking a final decision on its planned nationwide protest after meeting President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday night.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, told reporters after the brief meeting that the union must return to its stakeholders before announcing its next steps.
“We came for consultation with the President. We are done, so we have to go back to our meeting and continue tomorrow. By tomorrow, we will get the outcome,” he said.
Asked whether the planned protest would still proceed, Ajaero replied that the decision would be collective, not personal.
“It is not an organisation that one person rules. We’ll go back to the drawing board, digest all that Mr President said to us, and move forward from there.”
Ajaero confirmed that the NLC National Executive Council and state councils will weigh Tinubu’s assurances and issue a final position later today.
Edo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma—who attended the meeting—described the discussions as ongoing.
“Consultation is going on. We were dialoguing. At the end of the day, you will know what you need to know,” he said.
He added that both labour and government were committed to serving the national interest.
Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, noted that NLC leaders requested to see the President and were satisfied with the briefing they received.
“They are happy they’ve seen Mr President and heard firsthand that he has driven the economy out of the woods. It’s very good news,” she said.
Tuesday’s meeting comes amid labour’s consultations on whether to launch a nationwide protest over economic hardship, wage issues, and the slow implementation of agreed relief measures.
The Presidency and the Governors’ Forum have intensified engagement with labour leaders, urging continued dialogue rather than protests or strike action.
