The National Coordinator of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Young Stakeholders, Hon. Godwin Omini has said that statements credited to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Prof. Ango Abdullahi against the presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, were irresponsible and unbecoming of men of their stature.
Omini said the two elder statesmen, in their characteristic manner, descended on Atiku because of fear of his victory in the upcoming Presidential elections.
According to him, it may be understandable that Obasanjo fears an Atiku presidency because it will be out of his control, “therefore working hard against it will serve his interest”.
Omini alleged that it was Obasanjo who pushed and encouraged other people to exit PDP for other parties.
“While it is their right to express their political opinion one wonders at every political cycle why they make every effort to disparage Atiku Abubakar who served as the Vice President alongside Ango Abdullahi who was special adviser to Obasanjo on Agriculture.
“It will be recalled, that in the build-up to the 2019 election Obasanjo endorsed and poured encomium on Atiku as one capable of turning around the fortunes of the country for the best. One then wonders what has changed between then and now.
“Atiku, according to the available credible records, was responsible for most of the successes recorded by the Obasanjo administration, especially in the area of economic development, job creation, telecom revolution and banking sector reforms; it was the same Atiku that identified individuals who made the administration of Obasanjo thick.
“But for the patriotic stance of Atiku against the third term ambition of Obasanjo which divided them perhaps Obasanjo would have been comfortable with an Atiku who is widely believed has the experience and capacity to lead our nation at this time”, Omini said.
Omini further added that “it is ridiculous that their criticisms lack critical objectivity and not based on Atiku’s lack of capacity, experience or competence to lead Nigeria but on personal ego-tripping and selfish sentiments.
“Atiku has always been so proud of learning the rudiments of governance under his boss Obasanjo. He said it in both private and public spaces.
“One may not be surprised about Prof. Ango Abdullahi whose envy of Atiku Abubakar stinks to high heaven.
“PDP Young Stakeholders, therefore, wonder what is the political capital of Ango Abdullahi, the self-acclaimed leader of Northern Elders forum, a moribund one-man organisation, who has never hidden his disdain for Atiku’s political prowess.
“It is the same Prof. Ango Abdullahi who embarked on shadow chase of a consensus candidate for the PDP when it should be the sole responsibility of the party to shop for consensus if needed, which earned him bad press and wider condemnation.
Omini maintained that the comment of both elder statemen was most unfortunate but a sign of Victory for Atiku in the upcoming Presidential elections.
