A strong opposition front is beginning to take shape as former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, joins forces with northern political leaders to float a new party that could challenge and potentially unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
The movement, led by the League of Northern Democrats (LND), is part of a broader effort to unite opposition voices across Nigeria. At a recent meeting, the group warned that Nigeria is dangerously drifting toward authoritarianism due to rising impunity among political leaders and lawmakers who continue to ignore constitutional provisions.
“This is a slide into dictatorship. We must act now before it’s too late,” one of the speakers declared during the closed-door session.
Central to their strategy is the registration of a new political party to serve as a fresh vehicle for opposition politics. The group, however, said it is also open to merging with existing parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or the Social Democratic Party (SDP) if a consensus is reached. A final decision is expected by May 30.

At the strategy meeting, the LND adopted eight key resolutions. These include the formal approval of its constitution and leadership, support for the national opposition coalition, commitment to either launching a new political party or fusing into an existing one, and a resolve to engage northern governors on worsening poverty, insecurity, and unemployment.
The group also condemned the continued violation of Section 68 of the Nigerian Constitution by lawmakers who defect from one party to another without consequences. It accused the leadership of the National Assembly of turning a blind eye, especially in states like Delta and Kebbi where lawmakers reportedly switched political parties illegally without losing their seats.
According to LND, failure to enforce the constitution is pushing the country into dangerous territory. They vowed to mobilize Nigerians nationwide to demand accountability and respect for democratic values.
