The opposition coalition movement has formally directed its members to resign from their respective political parties and join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move that reshapes Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This decision was reached during a closed-door meeting convened by the interim National Chairman of the ADC, Senator David Mark, where key resolutions on the coalition’s political future were adopted.
The coalition further announced the suspension of its earlier process for the registration of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), which it had applied for at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). By shelving the ADA project, the coalition signaled its firm commitment to consolidating forces under the ADC.

Speaking after the meeting, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi explained that members unanimously resolved to rally behind the outcome of the party’s presidential primary. According to him, the coalition agreed to support whoever emerges as the ADC presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, with a collective determination to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The strategic meeting was attended by some of Nigeria’s most influential political figures, including former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi; former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai; former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi; and former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal. Their presence underscored the seriousness of the coalition’s resolve to unite under one platform.

ADC Emerges as Platform for 2027 Election Battle
The coalition had in July formally adopted the ADC as its political party of choice, describing it as the best vehicle through which opposition forces could galvanize nationwide support to challenge the APC’s dominance. The latest directive to members marks the practical implementation of that decision, as leaders now seek to translate political alignment into grassroots mobilisation.
Political analysts say the development could significantly alter the balance of power as Nigeria moves closer to 2027. With some of the country’s strongest opposition figures aligning, the ADC could become a formidable force, provided it manages to sustain unity, prevent internal rivalries, and rally voters across Nigeria’s diverse regions.
