The Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs has requested more time from the Court to file his memorandum of conditional appearance.
Senator George Akume faces a N60 billion suit instituted against him by Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State.
Akume’s request is contained in a motion filed by his Lawyer A. I Ameh SAN before a Benue State High Court sitting in Makurdi.
Counsel to Governor Ortom, Okon Efute, also a Senior Advocate, did not oppose the application by Akume’s Lawyer.
The presiding judge, Justice Augustine Ityonyiman, granted the Motion.
Akume’s Lawyer, Ameh (SAN), who had three pending processes before the Court withdrew his notice of preliminary objection filed on October 26, 2021, and filed a motion on notice praying the Court to set aside the issuance and service of the writ of summons and also strike out the suit for want of jurisdiction.
Justice Ityonyiman adjourned the matter to December 10, 2021, for hearing.
Governor Ortom instituted the suit against the Minister over his comments in the press conference of Monday, August 30, 2021, in Abuja, claiming the reports that ensued in various national dailies were scandalous, malicious and damaging to his person.
Governor Ortom, in the suit, is seeking N50 billion as general damages for libel and N10 billion as exemplary and aggravated damages.
