A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Convener of The Alternative, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has warned that the political posture of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, could weaken the PDP and ultimately benefit President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an exclusive media interview on Naija Unfiltered by Symfoni , Showunmi said the opposition risks losing relevance if it continues to battle internal divisions instead of building a united front.
“History will record this moment. Someone may be remembered as the person who destroyed the PDP, and that is a very dangerous position to occupy,” he said.
Allegation of Undermining PDP
Showunmi’s comments come amid claims within PDP ranks that Nyesom Wike and his allies are weakening the party while maintaining strategic ties with the ruling APC.
He cautioned that any internal sabotage or division could make it easier for President Bola Tinubu to secure re-election in 2027.

G5 Crisis and Internal Fallout
The PDP chieftain also pointed to the breakdown of the once-influential G5 governors’ bloc — which played a key role during the 2023 elections — as a major factor worsening divisions within the party.
The group, which previously acted in concert during the last election cycle, is now fractured, with disagreements among its members weakening its influence and leaving the PDP more vulnerable ahead of 2027.
Showunmi warned that failure by key political actors to resolve their differences could further destabilize the party’s structure.
Call for Opposition Unity
He urged opposition figures across parties to set aside personal interests and work towards a common goal if they hope to challenge the ruling APC.
“Imagine the opposition gets its act together and wins. The next day, there will be an audit of this period and everyone will answer for the role they played,” he said.
PDP Leadership Dispute
On the leadership crisis within the PDP, Showunmi maintained that the caretaker structure remains the only valid option pending final court decisions.
He stressed that respecting court rulings and internal party processes is essential for restoring order and credibility within the party.
Caution Over Edo Incident
Reacting to the recent security scare involving Labour Party figure Peter Obi in Edo State, Showunmi urged restraint in public commentary.
He said the matter should be treated as a criminal investigation, not politicised prematurely.
