The ousted National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu, who was challenging his removal in court, has graciously withdrawn his appeal, thereby creating a vacancy for the office of National Chairman of the Party.
The development further strengthens the position of members from the North Central Zone, who have been consulting among party leaders to produce a national chairman from the zone to complete the truncated tenure of Ayu.
To this end, Senator Ayu has thrown his weight behind the candidature of the former governor of Benue State, Mr. Gabriel Suswam, to assume the position of the national chairman of the party.
This development also escalates the rising tensions in the party between factions supporting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, who have been at loggerheads for the control of the party.
The pro Wike group passed a confidence vote on Wednesday, just hours before the party’s NEC meeting, in order to secure the continued stay of Damagum as the acting national chairman of the party.
In light of the current events, both Atiku and Wike camps are prepared to fight for the control of PDP.
