In a phenominal political realignment, the OBIDIENTS movement, a powerful grassroots platform that propelled Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, has officially severed ties with the Labour Party (LP) and is now aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The decision, backed by the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM), signals a major shake-up in Nigeria’s opposition politics.
COPDEM’s Board of Trustees (BOT) Chairman, Mr. D.E., announced the shift in a press release, criticizing the Labour Party for its failure to capitalize on the momentum of the Obidient movement.
“We can’t continue to wait for the Labour Party to utilize the influence they gained during the Obidient movement, especially when they’ve shown no regard for their constitution and have taken actions that undermine the democratic process,” Mr. D.E. declared.
The OBIDIENT movement, which emerged as a mass mobilization force for Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential bid, has grown disillusioned with the Labour Party’s leadership. Many supporters believe the party has failed to embrace the grassroots activism and progressive governance principles that fueled their rise.
COPDEM’s partnership with ADC offers what many see as a fresh start. The alliance is expected to create a well-structured and disciplined political force that prioritizes issue-based politics over internal party conflicts.

“By joining forces with ADC, we’re creating a powerful platform that will drive real political change and give a voice to the people,” COPDEM’s statement read.
With this realignment, ADC is set to become the new political home for OBIDIENTS nationwide. The partnership includes the establishment of the Directorate for Mobilization of Civil Societies and Progressive Organizations, which will lead grassroots engagement efforts across all 36 states and the FCT.
This integration is expected to position ADC as the leading platform for progressive forces in Nigeria, offering a credible alternative to both the ruling party and the Labour Party.
“We’ll ensure that COPDEM’s vast grassroots network and ADC’s political structure are not just aligned but actively working to reshape Nigeria’s democratic space,” Mr. D.E. emphasized.
With this move, COPDEM is calling on all Obidient supporters to rally behind ADC as the new vehicle for political transformation in Nigeria. The coalition believes that with a more organized and disciplined approach, the movement can achieve real political change.
“I congratulate all the OBIDIENT movement worldwide for this new development, and I’m confident that together, we’ll build a truly formidable opposition and create a Nigeria that truly works for its people,” Mr. D.E. concluded.
With theOBIDIENTS now shifting their allegiance, Nigeria’s opposition politics may be entering a new era—one where ADC takes center stage as the primary progressive force challenging the status quo.
