The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a serving police corporal and a University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) student over an alleged plan to launch a cult-related attack on campus.
The suspects, identified as Corporal Onwukwe Godswill and Ifeanyi Israel, a 200-level Biomedical Technology student, were apprehended on September 26, 2025, following a confrontation with the university’s internal security team.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the duo was intercepted while allegedly preparing for a violent clash with a rival cult group on the university premises.Weapons Recovered in Police OperationA swift search at the point of arrest led to the recovery of two locally made pistols, four live cartridges, two rounds of 9mm ammunition, and a small axe. Further investigation and a follow-up raid on the suspected cult leader’s residence yielded an additional locally made pistol and two machetes.
“All exhibits have been secured, and the suspects are currently in custody. An in-depth investigation is ongoing to unravel the full extent of their involvement in cultism and other criminal activities,” Iringe-Koko stated.
In response, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating cultism and criminality across the state. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.
The arrest has heightened concerns over the spread of cult-related violence in Nigerian universities and the police command has assured that more updates will follow as investigations continue.
