Princess Olatorera Oniru Demands Immediate Release of Nnamdi Kanu After 10 Years in Detention

Prominent Nigerian leader and human rights advocate, Princess Olatorera Majekodunmi-Oniru, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu immediately and unconditionally, describing his continued detention as a “decade too long of unjust incarceration.”

Princess Oniru’s declaration, titled “An Urgent Call for the Immediate Freedom of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” has stirred nationwide attention as she urged Nigerian authorities to restore justice, fairness, and the rule of law.

According to her, Kanu’s prolonged pre-trial detention, which began in 2015, violates both Nigeria’s Constitution and international human rights standards. “No charge, however grave, should eclipse the principle that every individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” she stated, emphasizing that Kanu’s ongoing imprisonment reflects a systemic breakdown in Nigeria’s judicial process.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a Nigerian-born British citizen and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has remained in detention for ten years despite never being convicted of any offense. His arrest and extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021 sparked global debate about due process and the rights of political detainees in Nigeria.

Princess Oniru also drew attention to the broader human rights crisis affecting Nigerians, mentioning cases of unlawful detentions, forced evictions, and growing insecurity nationwide. “From Borno to Lagos, millions of Nigerians are crying for help. Beyond politics, every life matters,” she declared.

Princess Oniru concluded that the world is watching Nigeria’s commitment to democracy and justice, saying, “The promise of our democracy depends not only on acts of courage within the halls of power but also on the bold, united actions of citizens.”
