At a high-level forum in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Nigeria’s Hon. Dr. Mrs. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh has called on African leaders to go beyond emergency care and begin prioritizing the full spectrum of women’s health.
As she honoured the invitation of the First Lady of Sierra Leone and President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), Her Excellency Fatima Maada Bio, the Rivers State Commissioner for Health stressed that conditions such as fibroids, adenomyosis, and abnormal uterine bleeding are too often neglected across Africa.
“Women are not just surviving — they deserve to live healthy, dignified lives. We must prioritize women’s health, not just their survival,” she declared.
Her remarks struck a chord with First Ladies, health advocates, and policy influencers gathered under OAFLAD to address the gaps in women’s healthcare across the continent.
Dr. Oreh emphasized the urgent need for equitable healthcare policies, increased funding, and better recognition of long-ignored reproductive conditions that silently affect millions of African women.

“These are not rare conditions. They are common, yet barely discussed. It’s time we stop normalizing pain and start prioritizing solutions,” she said.
Her meeting with First Lady Fatima Maada Bio signals a growing commitment to make women’s health a continental priority. Both women pledged to push for stronger advocacy, collaborative policies, and strategic health investments that truly meet the needs of African women.
