Minister of Interior Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has said 446 out of the 907 escapees from the Oyo jailbreak have been recaptured.
Aregbesola also noted 392 are still at large. At the same time, 69 inmates never left the facility during the attack that saw two persons killed.
The Minister said these when he visited the facility on Sunday in Oyo State. He vowed to pursue and recapture all the inmates who escaped from the Abolongo Custodial Centre of the Nigeria Correctional Service, NCoS, on Friday night during the vicious attack on the facility by yet to be identified gunmen.
“I’m assuring Nigerians that the Federal Government will pursue not just those who attacked our facility, but those who have escaped lawful custody.
“The attack was unconscionable; I commend officers of the Nigeria Correctional Service and other members of sister security agencies who provided perimeter security for our facility for fighting gallantly and holding fort before the attackers were able to gain access to the awaiting trial section of the facility, however, those who escaped are already being pursued. Some have been rearrested; many more will still be captured.
“We are sharing the database with all security agencies in the country, including the Interpol, so those who escape our recapture efforts can be nabbed.
“To those on the run, be assured you have nowhere to hide. You can run, but you can’t hide. We’ll fish you out! We are publishing details of those we escaped in the mass media so the public can assist in that effort,” the Minister said.
MAKINDE PROMISES TO UPGRADE SECURITY SYSTEM IN OYO PRISON
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has said the Abolongo Correctional Centre in Oyo Town will now have CCTV cameras to monitor activities in the facility.
Governor Makinde made the promise when he led officials on an on-the-spot assessment of the Correctional facility. He said this after disclosing that two security operatives died in the attack that saw over 800 prison inmates escape.
At the incident scene, the governor said, “Although this is a federal government facility, I have directed that CCTV cameras be installed.
“The cameras will be connected to our Security Control Room in Ibadan.
“We will also install CCTV cameras in all other correctional facilities in the state for better monitoring of these centres.”
