Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara can now breathe as members of the House of Assembly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, have withdrawn the impeachment notice against him.
The lawmakers announced their decision in a notice read on the floor if the Assembly. They cited respect for President Bola Tinubu as reason for their action.
The conflict between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, split lawmakers in the House, with 27 of them decamping from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The rivalry resulted in a number of incidents, including the emergence of parallel sittings, the discovery of an impeachment plots against the governor, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and a wave of resignations among the pro-Wike commissioners in Fubara’s cabinet.
The lawmakers officially began their sessions in the state capital of Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
The lawmakers gathered solely to focus on the withdrawal of the impeachment notice against Fubara during their deliberations.
This follows a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the warring parties in the Aso Villa in Abuja on Monday, where a truce was mediated.
