Rivers Crisis: Former Governor, Ada-George Sues for Peace Amid Political Tension

Amidst the ongoing Rivers crisis, former Governor Rufus Ada-George calls for restraint, urging all parties to prioritize peace and stability in the state.

The political crisis in Rivers State continues to escalate following the Supreme Court judgment of February 28, 2025. As tensions rise, a former Governor of the state, Chief Rufus Ada-George, has stepped forward to call for calm. In a strong appeal to all parties involved, he urged restraint, emphasizing that the peace and stability of Rivers State should be the top priority.

Chief Ada-George, who served as Governor in 1991 under the now-defunct National Republican Convention (NRC), warned against the use of threats, ultimatums, and inflammatory statements. According to him, such actions will only deepen the crisis rather than resolve it. His statement comes at a critical time when political actors in Rivers State remain locked in a fierce struggle, fueled by divisions within the government and legislature.

The Rivers crisis has sparked heated debates and actions from different factions, each pushing their own agenda. However, Chief Ada-George has urged political leaders to set aside their differences and focus on the collective good of the state. He specifically cautioned lawmakers to avoid actions driven by personal interests, reminding them that their duty is to serve the people, not to engage in power struggles.

His message states this, “The ongoing crisis must not be allowed to escalate further, as it could have damaging consequences for governance, development, and the daily lives of residents.”

In his appeal, the former Governor stressed the importance of dialogue and reconciliation. He called on all stakeholders, including political leaders and lawmakers, to seek peaceful solutions instead of resorting to aggressive tactics. According to him, unity is the only way forward for Rivers State, and it is crucial for all parties to approach the situation with a mindset of compromise and resolution.

The intervention of Chief Ada-George highlights the urgent need for de-escalation. As someone who has led the state in the past, his words carry weight, and many will be watching to see if his appeal influences the actions of key political figures.

Despite the current challenges, Chief Ada-George remains optimistic. He assured the people of Rivers State that there will be light at the end of the tunnel, encouraging them not to lose hope. His message reflects a broader desire for stability and peace.
