There is palpable tension in Rivers State as plans by some powerful forces to achieve impeachment of the state’s governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, continue to gather traction.
SYMFONI NEWS reliably gathered that the unease is brought about by the raging animosity between the camps of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike and Governor Fubara.
The tension is building even though certain elders and political bigwigs, such as former governors of Rivers, are actively working to mediate a truce and prevent the dispute from intensifying further and having a detrimental effect on the peace of the entire Niger Delta.
Amidst the brewing tension, a highly placed source in the affairs of the state has alleged that some members of the Rivers State Assembly have concluded plots to thwart the conduct of by-elections in the state.
The source, while alleging a leaked draft of an already written court ruling by a Judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, said the lawmakers plan to approach the courts to challenge the legality of the letter sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct by-elections to fill the vacuum created as a result of their defection to another political party.
The Source also alleged that the 27 lawmakers have induced the High Court Judge to rule in their favour.
“The plan is to secure the Judge’s ruling, which is already written, deliver it tomorrow, and serve Fubara an impeachment notice on Tuesday. The Judge already knows that there is an existing High Court ruling from Rivers State which barred the former lawmakers from parading themselves and also recognised Edison as the New Speaker. And instead of directing them to appeal it, he wants to give the Pro-Wike camp a midnight injunction to enable them to embark on the next stage of their madness, which will lead to a deadly crisis,” the source alleged.
Meanwhile, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has warned that the ongoing feud could throw the state into political turmoil and destabilise the entire Niger Delta region.
