The Nigerian Senate has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently approve a ₦200 million compensation for the family of a two-year-old child, Omoria, who was tragically killed during an NDLEA operation in Asaba, Delta State.
During the Thursday plenary, lawmakers also directed the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to take full responsibility for the medical treatment and multiple surgeries required by the child’s sibling, who sustained a serious eye injury during the same incident.
“This is not a matter we should handle with mere grammar. A child has died. Another is living with a bullet in the eye. Money cannot replace a lost life,” Senator Adams Oshiomhole expressed.

The Senate confirmed that the officer involved is currently facing prosecution. However, lawmakers stressed that justice must go beyond punishment. They insisted that the affected family be adequately compensated both financially and medically.
“This is very pathetic. The Senate is urging Mr. President to approve a ₦200 million compensation on compassionate grounds, while the NDLEA should cover all surgeries needed to restore the second child’s vision,” the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio ruled.

He added that the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance must follow up with both the Presidency and the NDLEA and report back in two months.
Furthermore, the entire chamber of the 10th Senate stood to observe a minute of silence in honor of little Omoria, with the Senate President describing the child as “a Nigerian who could have been a leader tomorrow.”
“This child could have been any of ours. He could have grown to be a leader tomorrow. We mourn with the family, but beyond mourning, we are demanding action,” he said. “Let this be a warning to all officers: The uniform you wear is not a licence to kill and go home to sleep peacefully. We will follow this case to the end,” the Senate President sent a strong warning to the Nigerian force.

The Senate President also encouraged individual senators to reach out to the grieving family with support, stating that beyond legislation, they must serve as true representatives of the people in both words and actions.
“The soul of the child should rest in peace, and may we never witness this kind of tragedy again,” the Senate President concluded.
