Shehu Sani Backs Self-Defence Against Bandits, Questions Role of Citizens in Security

Human Right activist, Senator Shehu Sani, has added his voice to the growing call for Nigerians to take their safety into their own hands by going for self-defence when attacked by bandits. In a recent post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he said that self-defence is not just a suggestion, but a necessary action for many communities facing deadly attacks by bandit

Sani’s comments came after a similar statement by retired General TY Danjuma, who once urged citizens not to wait for help from the government when under attack. According to Sani, Danjuma only repeated what many Nigerians have been saying for years — that people have the right to defend themselves when the government cannot guarantee their safety.

“People shouldn’t just fold their arms and be slaughtered by bandits,” Sani said. “What is then the meaning of the popular phrase that ‘security is a collective responsibility’?”
