Simon Ekpa, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) Autopilot faction, has taken his campaign for Biafran independence to the international stage, securing a significant lobbying deal with a US firm. Ekpa, who identifies as the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile (BRGIE), signed a $130,000 contract with Moran Global Strategies (MGS), a firm owned by former US lawmaker James Moran.
The agreement, effective from June 15, 2024, outlines MGS’s role in advocating for Biafran independence within the US government and private sector. MGS will provide strategic advice and facilitate interactions with key stakeholders, including members of the US Executive and Legislative branches. The firm will also engage with third-party interests to garner support for the Biafran cause.
A central element of MGS’s strategy involves promoting a narrative that positions an independent Biafra as a key US ally in the region. The firm will emphasize Biafra’s potential to serve as a bulwark against Islamic terrorism and highlight the shared interests between the US and a future Biafran state. Furthermore, MGS will work to educate US and international stakeholders on concerns related to the Nigerian government.
These concerns, as outlined in the agreement, include human rights abuses, religious freedom violations, the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, the rise of Islamic fundamentalism within the Nigerian government, and Nigeria’s alignment with adversaries of the United States. The agreement also highlights broader security concerns as a point of focus for MGS’s advocacy efforts.
The contract stipulates a monthly fee of $10,000 to be paid by BRGIE to MGS for their services, with the agreement set to expire on June 14, 2025. The agreement includes a provision for annual renewal upon expiration. Through this deal, Ekpa aims to leverage US influence to advance the Biafran independence movement and bring global attention to the grievances and aspirations of those seeking a separate Biafran state.
