“Support Affected Traders of Kano Market Fire”- Atiku Urges Govt.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on both the federal and Kano State governments to provide immediate support for traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Farm Centre GSM Market in Kano.

The fire, which was confirmed by the Kano State Fire Service to have been caused by a battery explosion, destroyed shops and goods worth millions of naira. While no lives were lost, many traders have been left counting heavy losses.

Reacting to the incident via a post on his official X handle, Atiku expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families. He also praised the swift response of the fire service, whose efforts, he noted, helped prevent loss of life and reduced the extent of the damage.

However, Atiku went beyond condolences, urging governments at all levels—especially the administration of President Bola Tinubu and the Kano State Government—to come to the aid of the affected traders without delay.

“I urge both the federal and state governments to support the affected traders and ensure that such preventable disasters are minimised,” he said.

He also called for urgent reforms in market safety, particularly in the handling of batteries and other electrical items, stressing that more must be done to protect lives and livelihoods.

“We must urgently address safety in our markets by implementing stricter regulations for the handling of batteries and electrical goods,” the former vice president added.
