Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has praised renowned chess advocate, Tunde Onakoya, for using the game as a tool to rescue children from poverty and reshape their futures.
In a recent meeting that took place at Atiku’s office, the presidential hopeful listened closely as Onakoya shared his ten-year journey with Chess in Slums Africa, a movement that has empowered children in some of Nigeria’s most underserved communities.
“He’s not just teaching them how to play chess,” Atiku said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “He’s helping them think, dream, and win—both on the board and in life.”
During the visit, Onakoya gifted Atiku a stunning, custom-made chess set titled “NeoChess x Tunde Onakoya,” uniquely designed with traditional Adire fabric patterns—a symbol of cultural pride blended with modern purpose.
But it wasn’t just the chessboard that left a mark. Onakoya spoke passionately about his ambition to build the biggest chess institute in the world, right from Nigeria“Talent is universal, but opportunity is not,” Tunde stated.
“I’ve committed to supporting his efforts and playing a role in bringing that vision to life,” Atiku assured, calling the conversation “enlightening and energizing.”
Tunde also extended an invitation to Atiku for his upcoming birthday, which he plans to turn into a platform for youth empowerment.
