Direct Flight Route

Nigeria and Jamaica are considering a direct flight route under the Bilateral Air Service Agreement to enhance diplomatic, cultural, and economic relations. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo and Jamaican Ambassador Lincoln Downer push for stronger ties.

Nigeria and Jamaica Direct Flight Route

Nigeria and Jamaica are set to explore the possibility of a direct flight route as both nations work towards strengthening their Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA). This development was revealed in a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Tunde Moshood, on Wednesday.

The Nigerian Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, recently welcomed the Jamaican Ambassador to Nigeria, Lincoln Downer, and his Consular, Andre Hibbert, to his office in Abuja. The meeting focused on reviewing and improving diplomatic engagements, particularly in the area of air services.

Ambassador Downer emphasized the need for enhanced bilateral relations between Nigeria and Jamaica, pointing out the potential benefits of a direct air link between the two nations. He acknowledged that both countries have a long history of cultural and economic exchanges, making air connectivity a crucial step towards strengthening their relationship.

“I have been tasked by my country to review and improve on the diplomatic engagements between Jamaica and Nigeria, especially concerning air services,” Downer stated.

The Jamaican diplomat further noted that Nigerian culture is gaining significant popularity in Jamaica. Afrobeat music and Nollywood films have captured the interest of many Jamaicans, reinforcing the necessity for improved air travel between the two nations. This growing cultural appreciation, he explained, serves as a strong foundation for closer diplomatic ties.

“There is no reason why we should not have a direct flight between our countries. Nigerians love Jamaica, and there is a rising demand for Jamaican spices in Nigeria,” Downer added.

In response, Minister Keyamo welcomed the initiative, expressing his eagerness to commence the necessary processes to facilitate direct flights between Nigeria and Jamaica. He confirmed that a dedicated committee would be established to fast-track the implementation of the Bilateral Air Service Agreement.

“I am delighted to start the BASA arrangements. To ensure a swift resolution, we will set up a committee to expedite the process,” said Keyamo.

Keyamo also affirmed his commitment to ensuring the successful execution of the agreement, even stating his willingness to travel to Jamaica if necessary to finalize and sign the BASA deal in person.

A key challenge highlighted during the discussions was Jamaica’s current lack of a national carrier. Downer acknowledged this limitation, revealing that Jamaica currently depends on neighboring Trinidad and Tobago for air transport services. To address this issue, he proposed integrating the BASA between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, ensuring seamless air connectivity between Nigeria and the Caribbean region.

Downer also shared a personal revelation, expressing his deep appreciation for Nigeria. He disclosed that during his four months as the Jamaican envoy to Nigeria, he discovered a potential ancestral connection to the country.

“I have since discovered that Nigeria might be my ancestral home after all,” Downer remarked.
