President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency in response to escalating attacks across the country, directing the Armed Forces and police to immediately recruit thousands of new personnel to reinforce security operations.
In a national address on Wednesday, the President authorised the Nigeria Police Force to recruit 20,000 additional officers, bringing ongoing recruitment to 50,000 personnel nationwide. He also approved the use of NYSC orientation camps as training centres to fast-track the intake.
He ordered that police officers previously assigned to VIP guard duties be withdrawn and subjected to intensive retraining before being redeployed to high-risk areas.
The President further directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to deploy all trained forest guards for immediate operations against terrorists and bandits hiding in forested areas. The DSS is also to begin fresh recruitment to strengthen its forest operations.
“This is a national emergency, and we are responding by deploying more boots on the ground,” Tinubu said, urging citizens to support security agencies as they battle armed groups across the country.
He commended security operatives for securing the release of 24 abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi State and 38 kidnapped worshippers in Kwara State, assuring that efforts to free the remaining Catholic school students abducted in Niger State would continue.

Tinubu expressed sympathy to families affected by recent attacks in Kebbi, Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Yobe, and Kwara, and paid tribute to fallen soldiers, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba.
He also appealed to the National Assembly to begin reviewing laws that would allow states to create their own police forces, saying:
“Those who want to test our resolve must not mistake our restraint for weakness.”
The President advised state governments to reconsider establishing boarding schools in remote, unsecured locations and urged churches and mosques in vulnerable areas to ensure they receive adequate protection during worship.
Tinubu highlighted the creation of the new Ministry of Livestock Development as a solution to recurring farmer–herder clashes, encouraging herders to embrace ranching, end open grazing, and surrender illegal weapons.
