Anambra Poll: The Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, has reaffirmed the Commission’s unwavering commitment to transparency, professionalism, and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral process, assuring that preparations for the November 8 Anambra Governorship Election are at an advanced stage.

She gave the assurance on Wednesday during the Commission’s third quarterly consultative meeting with media executives of INEC Press Corps held at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Welcoming participants, including members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), editors, and senior media professionals, Agbamuche-Mbu commended the consistent engagement of the media in INEC’s democratic journey. She noted that such collaboration remains vital to strengthening citizens’ trust in elections and democratic institutions.

The Acting Chairman paid glowing tribute to the immediate past INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who bowed out of office on October 7, 2025, describing his tenure as one defined by “innovation, institutional strength, and integrity.”

According to her, “Prof. Yakubu’s invaluable contributions went beyond the Commission to shape the democratic landscape across the African continent.”

Anambra Poll: 10 of 13 Key Activities Completed

Speaking on the Commission’s election calendar, Agbamuche-Mbu disclosed that INEC has successfully completed ten out of the thirteen scheduled activities for the Anambra State Governorship Election slated for November 8, 2025.

The remaining three activities include the publication of Notice of Poll (October 25, 2025), last day for campaigns (November 6, 2025), and the election day itself (November 8, 2025).

She assured that INEC remains steadfast in adhering strictly to the published timetable, urging political parties to comply with all regulations, particularly the campaign deadline.

“The Commission has been working assiduously and making arrangements for the successful conduct of the Anambra election,” she said. “All non-sensitive materials have been delivered to the state, voter education is ongoing, and engagements with security agencies at all levels have been robust.”

Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu disclosed that INEC’s media accreditation portal, opened on September 1, 2025, has received applications from 43 media organisations seeking accreditation for 363 personnel. She emphasized that the portal will close at midnight on October 24, 2025, warning that there will be no extension.

She stressed the importance of professionalism and factual reporting, describing the media as a “bulwark against fake and misleading information.”
“The accreditation tags issued by the Commission come with a security code that can be scanned by relevant authorities to confirm authenticity,” she added, urging journalists to verify information with INEC before publication.

The Acting Chairman also provided updates on other scheduled elections, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections set for February 21, 2026. The polls will be conducted across 68 constituencies — six Area Council chairmanship positions and 62 wards.

She revealed that eight of the thirteen scheduled activities for the FCT election have already been completed, while others such as the submission of polling agents’ names, publication of the voters’ register, and campaign period will follow in due course.

Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu announced that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which resumed nationwide on August 18, 2025 (online) and August 25, 2025 (in-person), has recorded impressive participation levels across all states.

“The Commission is impressed by the response of Nigerians,” she said. “It is a testament that citizens believe in our democracy and the Commission’s efforts to ensure every eligible Nigerian can determine who leads them.”

The CVR exercise will run for a full year and is expected to close on August 30, 2026. Weekly updates of registration figures, she added, are published on INEC’s website for transparency.

Providing an update on the registration of new political parties, Agbamuche-Mbu disclosed that the Commission has received 171 requests, out of which 14 associations have met the constitutional and legal requirements to proceed to the next stage.

Each application, she said, was assessed based on compliance with Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties (2022).
