Tribute: “He was a veteran freedom fighter and statesman”-Atiku Mourns Late Edwin Clark

In a heartfelt post on X, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed deep sorrow following the demise of Chief Edwin Clark, 97, the esteemed Ebi-Ebekekere, Owei of Western Ijaw in Delta State.

Abubakar’s tribute came as Nigeria was still reeling from the loss of statesman Pa Ayo Adebanjo, 96.

“Our nation was still mourning the demise of exemplary statesman Pa Ayo Adebanjo, 96, when the sad news of your passing away was brought to my attention,”
— Atiku Abubakar

Atiku recalled Clark’s remarkable journey as a “Trojan war horse in the battlefields for independence” and lauded him for his unwavering commitment to nation-building, true federalism, equity, and good governance. Described as a veteran freedom fighter, educationist, philanthropist, legal luminary, and astute administrator, Clark’s legacy spans decades of public service. From his early days in local government in 1953 to rising through the ranks as a State Commissioner and later serving as a distinguished senator, his career was marked by a staunch advocacy for inclusiveness—especially for Nigeria’s minority ethnic groups.

Atiku’s tribute highlighted that the Clark’s fiery passion and fearless stance against corrupt political practices earned him a reputation as a loud voice of reason in a turbulent political landscape. His contributions to mentoring a generation of nationalists and patriots have left an indelible mark on the nation’s democratic fabric.

Atiku noted that he and many of Clark’s mentees vow to “rekindle the torch” of his vision and continue the relentless pursuit of a just and egalitarian society in Nigeria. The grief shared by his nuclear and extended families—as well as by PANDEF, the Ijaw nation, Delta State, and the country at large—reflects the profound impact of his life’s work.

May God grant his gentle soul eternal rest!
