Yuletide celebration in Anambra State was yesterday cut short as unknown gunmen unleashed a deadly attack in Uga, Aguata local government area, leaving at least two policemen dead and others seriously wounded.
Eyewitnesses said it was a rain of bullets at Uga roundabout on 28th December at about 5:50 pm when the gunmen came in their terrific numbers from Umuchu-Umunze road, weilding Ak47 and other assault riffles, shooting sporadically and kidnapping motorists especially those sighted with flashy cars at the same time.
It was gathered that when they sighted a group of policemen coming from Ezinifite axis, they opened fire and gunned down two policemen in a very gory manner.
One of the eyewitnesses who pleaded anonymity said “bullets from the unknown gunmen’s AK 47 rifles shattered the windows of our CAPAD Filling Station” though as at press time, no injuries were recorded therein.
“Anambra State remains a target zone from hoodlums coming from neighboring states and elsewhere. We call on all to be cautious and security conscious while we pray for those officers on duty who regrettably lost their lives in these needless carnage at the time of our yearly Christmas festivities”
In what was described as bloody Thursday, hoodlums identified by the locals as unknown gunmen metaphorically took over Uga,a community in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Another eyewitness who narrated her miraculous escape from straying bullets said “they were not in a hurry to go and remained for long unchallenged. It was Very sad as people were screaming, running and scampering away for their dear lives as the gunshots were deafening and frightening”
When contacted, the Anambara State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, but said information available to the command about the incident were still sketchy as at press time.
