Authorities in Ogun State have provided fresh updates following a devastating road accident earlier today involving British-Nigerian boxing icon Anthony Joshua on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The crash, which occurred around 11:00 AM on Monday, December 29, 2025, near the Danco Filling Station in the Makun axis of Sagamu, has left two individuals dead and the former heavyweight champion hospitalized with minor injuries. Witnesses at the scene reported that the black Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and three others slammed into a stationary truck while traveling toward the boxer’s ancestral home in Sagamu. The impact was catastrophic for those in the front and side of the vehicle, as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that two male British nationals died instantly, while the driver sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Investigation into the cause of the tragedy is now underway, with the FRSC attributing the crash to a combination of excessive speeding and a wrongful overtaking maneuver. Preliminary findings also suggest that a burst tire may have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle before it rammed into the parked commercial truck. While Joshua was reportedly seated in the rear and managed to survive with non-life-threatening injuries, footage circulating on social media showed the 36-year-old dazed and being assisted from the wreckage by local responders and his security detail, who were following in a separate Mitsubishi Pajero.
The accident has triggered a wave of public concern and criticism regarding the state of emergency medical response in the region. Online observers pointed out that the global sports star was transported to the hospital in the back of a police van rather than a specialized medical ambulance, prompting an outcry over Nigeria’s infrastructure.
In response, the Ogun State Government issued a formal statement through Special Adviser Kayode Akinmade, expressing profound condolences to the families of the deceased and describing the loss of life as a painful blow. Despite the shock of the event, Joshua’s management has tentatively indicated that the boxer is conscious and stable, though he remains under observation at an undisclosed medical facility as fans worldwide wait for a direct update on his recovery.
Prominent boxing figure Eddie Hearn has also addressed the incident, expressing cautious relief. Speaking to British media, Hearn confirmed that he and his team have been working to establish direct contact with Joshua.
