Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has launched a new school feeding programme to fight hunger, particularly for children in Zamfara State.
The programme, flagged off at Dan-Turai Primary School in Gusau, is part of the State government’s fresh plan to reduce the high number of out-of-school children in the state.
Governor Lawal joined pupils to share a symbolic meal, showing his support and belief in the project. He said the feeding initiative is one of the best ways to get more children back in school and keep them there.
“Many children in our state are not going to school because of poverty, hunger, and insecurity. This programme is one of our emergency actions to change that,” he said.

The Governor explained that the project is supported by local and international groups. Two key partners—FINPACT Development Foundation and the International Center for Economic Development—will help feed over 4,000 pupils in five local government areas: Gusau, Talata Mafara, Anka, Maru, and Shinkafi.
He added that the state government is also working closely with UNICEF and the World Bank’s AGILE programme to improve the education system.
Education Commissioner Wadatau Madawaki and Humanitarian Affairs Commissioner Salisu Musa praised the project, calling it a “game-changer” in the fight against child hunger and illiteracy.

Zamfara has one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children in Nigeria, but with this new feeding programme, the government hopes to rewrite the story—one hot meal at a time.
Governor Lawal urged other groups and donors to support the mission, saying, “Together, we can bring every child back to the classroom.”
