Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticized the Tinubu led government over the renovation and renaming of the Abuja International Conference Centre (AICC), describing it as a misplaced priority in a country where people are dying from hunger and lack of basic healthcare.
Speaking at a book launch event in Abuja, Obi expressed shock at how government officials spend public funds on luxury projects while Nigerians suffer daily.
“They make you local government chairman, governor, or president. What do you do? You renovate a house that doesn’t need renovation—just to make yourself more comfortable—while others are dying,” Obi said.
He particularly referenced the AICC renovation, questioning the logic behind investing in such projects when women are still dying during childbirth due to poor medical facilities.

“You go and build a conference centre in a place where women are dying. Did you see the recent report that Nigeria is the worst place to give birth? Every seven minutes, a woman dies in childbirth—yet what we’re doing is building mansions and renovating buildings,” Obi argued.

“All we are doing is using resources to renovate buildings and houses while primary healthcare centres have no toilets, no equipment, nothing,” he emphasized.
He added that Nigeria’s problem is not the lack of money but the lack of leadership that cares for the people.
Obi also warned that the country is heading toward a dangerous collapse if nothing changes. Comparing Nigeria to the Titanic, he said: “Some people are dancing and buying more houses, not knowing the ship is sinking. When it goes down, it will consume everyone—rich or poor.”

He urged Nigerians to demand accountability from those in power and to choose leaders who are truly ready to serve.
“This system we have today does not care about you. If anyone says they care, ask them: how did they serve in the past? What value did they bring?” Obi pontificated.
