Vice President Kashim Shettima has lauded former President Goodluck Jonathan as a “profound lesson on life after public service,” during the 10th anniversary celebration of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) and the former president’s birthday. The event, which brought together political, religious, and business leaders from across Nigeria and beyond, celebrated Jonathan’s enduring commitment to democracy, peace, and humanity.
In his keynote address, VP Shettima described Jonathan as a living example of leadership that transcends office, noting that his post-presidential years have been marked by active nation-building and advocacy for democratic principles. “Life begins anew when we leave high office,” Shettima said, adding that Jonathan’s decision to channel his passion into the GJF demonstrates a lifelong dedication to public service.
Highlighting the challenges democracy faces in Nigeria and across West Africa, Shettima stressed the importance of respecting electoral outcomes and the rule of law. “No matter our political preferences, democracy offers repeated opportunities to renew our mandates. The government sets the pace, but citizens and leaders must saturate that space with positive energy,” he said.
Shettima singled out Jonathan’s humility and integrity, noting that the former president prioritized the lives of Nigerians over personal political ambition. “The highest point of Jonathan’s presidency was not a second-term victory, but his courageous concession that saved the nation from a precipice,” he said.
Over the past decade, the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation has championed democratic culture, accountability, and human rights, providing a blueprint for post-office service. VP Shettima commended the foundation’s work, saying it reminds every citizen and leader that public service is a continuum, extending well beyond formal office.
The vice president also praised the team behind the GJF for maintaining the foundation’s mission over the years and encouraged them to continue advancing peace, collaboration, and transformation across Africa. The event concluded with a birthday celebration for the former president, highlighting a decade of his post-presidential legacy in service to humanity
Great job simplifying something so complex.
