Amaechi at 60: As the former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi marked his 60th birthday, political figures had taken turns to celebrate and hail his impact, each describing him as a “dear friend” and “brother.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Governor Peter Obi all released public messages celebrating the former Rivers Governor’s milestone, highlighting his legacy in governance, leadership, and infrastructure.
Buhari, under whom Amaechi served for eight years as Transport Minister, described him as a “golden fish” and “an asset to my government.” He praised Amaechi’s role in reviving Nigeria’s railway system, completing abandoned projects, and pushing for infrastructural growth.
“In Amaechi, I found a trusted ally in the drive to modernize Nigeria’s transport network,” Buhari stated through his spokesperson, Garba Shehu. “The railway system, long abandoned, came back to life under his watch—benefiting millions of Nigerians.”
Atiku Abubakar, who competed against Amaechi in several political battles over the years, set rivalry aside to honour his longtime associate. “My dear friend, the impact you continue to have on the development of our country is inspiring,” Atiku wrote. “You wear the cape of excellence in public service.”
He wished Amaechi “abundant grace, honour and peace” in the years ahead.

Peter Obi, leader of the Labour Party, also struck a personal tone. “Your Excellency, and my dear brother,” he wrote, “On behalf of my family and the Obidient family, I wish to most sincerely congratulate you on your 60th birthday.” Obi prayed for continued blessings, good health, and happiness for Amaechi and his family.
The unifying tone of the messages stands out in a political climate often marked by sharp divisions. That Buhari, Atiku, and Obi all found common ground in celebrating Amaechi at 60, suggests a broader recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s political and infrastructural development.

From his early days as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, to serving as Governor and then a federal minister, Amaechi has played a central role in shaping key policies over the last two decades.
As he turns 60, today’s tributes serve as more than birthday wishes — they are endorsements of a legacy still unfolding, and a reminder that in Nigerian politics, service and impact can sometimes unite even the fiercest of rivals.
