2027: Atiku Vows to Implement Oronsaye Report, Cut Cost of Governance

Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar has pledged to fully implement the Oronsaye Committee Report if elected president in the coming 2027 general election, promising to reduce waste, eliminate duplication and cut the cost of governance.

The former Vice President, in a statement issued on Friday by his official spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, said the report would be implemented transparently immediately after his inauguration.

Atiku said his administration would begin with an audit of all existing government agencies to determine their number, functions and relevance.

He criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, alleging that it had failed to implement the Oronsaye Report despite previously promising to do so.

According to Atiku, his administration would eliminate unnecessary agencies, merge institutions with overlapping functions, block financial leakages and redirect savings towards healthcare, education, infrastructure, job creation and social protection.

“I will not ask Nigerians to make sacrifices while government continues to waste money. Nigeria does not need more promises. Nigeria needs action,” Atiku said.

He added that reducing the cost of governance would begin with the presidency and the activities and maintenance of government officials, promising to lead by example.

“I will make the government smarter, more efficient, and accountable so that more public money works for the Nigerian people,” he said.

The Oronsaye Report, submitted in 2012 by the Presidential Committee on the Restructuring and Rationalisation of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies, recommended the merger, restructuring or scrapping of several government bodies as part of efforts to reduce the cost of governance.
