The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off its planned nationwide protest against the 50% increase in telecommunication tariffs, which was scheduled for today, February 4, 2025. This decision came after a meeting with the Federal Government, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, on Monday.

The meeting focused on addressing concerns about the tariff hike and maintaining industrial peace. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, explained that the increase was based on a study by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Prior to this development, the NLC had been mobilizing its affiliate unions and state councils for the protest, expressing strong opposition to the tariff hike. The union described the increase as “insensitive, unjustifiable, and a direct assault on Nigerian workers and the general populace.”

The NLC’s decision to suspend the protest indicates a potential for continued dialogue between the labor union and the government to address the concerns surrounding the tariff increase.
