The Lagos State government has installed new speed cameras and traffic monitoring systems to reduce overspeeding and ensure road safety.
Overspeeding
The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with Huawei Technologies, has deployed four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to monitor traffic and detect overspeeding across the state.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made this known at a press briefing on Thursday. He explained that the new installations would complement the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other Traffic Management Solution devices.
According to Osiyemi, two new checkpoint sites have been set up to detect overspeeding. One is located at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80km/h, while another is at Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a speed limit of 60km/h. These sites are strategically placed to help curb reckless driving, which is a major cause of accidents.
Additionally, two e-police sites have been installed at Allen Avenue Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road. These will detect traffic violations such as running red lights, illegal U-turns, and lane violations.
Osiyemi urged motorists to comply with the new system, emphasizing that enforcement would begin immediately. He stated that drivers caught violating traffic rules would receive SMS notifications detailing their offences and corresponding fines—₦20,000 for running a red light and ₦50,000 for overspeeding.

“This system is not meant to punish drivers but to promote responsible driving and reduce road accidents,” Osiyemi added.
Other officials present at the briefing included Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology Olatunbosun Alake, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation Olawale Musa, and representatives from Huawei Technologies.
