Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, was honoured in Seoul, South Korea on Friday with the Founder’s Sunhak Peace Prize — but the real story lies in the inspiration behind the award.
Jonathan, once a boy from a small fishing village in Nigeria’s Niger Delta, used the global spotlight to remind the world that great leadership and peacebuilding can come from the humblest beginnings.
“This honour belongs to every Nigerian who believes in peace and to every African working for positive change,” Jonathan said in his acceptance speech. He dedicated the award to peace-loving individuals who have joined hands with him in the journey for democracy, unity, and good governance.

In an era where conflict and political tension seem to dominate headlines, Jonathan’s recognition shines as a rare light. But rather than bask in personal praise, the former president used the platform to rally global leaders to do more.
“The world is threatened by persistent conflicts, weakening democracies, and deep inequalities,” he said. “But peace is the foundation for development, justice, and human dignity.”
Jonathan urged leaders everywhere to embrace dialogue and reconciliation over division and war. According to him, peace is not a lofty ideal — it is a necessity, and one that demands bold leadership and commitment.

Showing that his work is far from over, Jonathan announced that the financial reward from the prize would be donated to his foundation — The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation — to further support peace, democracy, and inclusive development across Africa.
“I have continued to work through platforms like the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, the West African Elders Forum, and the International Summit Council for Peace,” he said. “This prize encourages not just me, but all peacebuilders across Africa.”
The former president didn’t forget to express heartfelt gratitude to his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, whom he described as a pillar of strength in his life’s journey.
