Port Harcourt — A top magistrate in Rivers State, Ejike King George, has voluntarily resigned from the judiciary, citing dissatisfaction with what he describes as a “quasi-military administration” now steering the affairs of the state.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Judge of Rivers State and dated April 11, 2025, George made it clear that his decision was driven by his personal and professional discomfort with the nature of the current leadership.
“This difficult and regrettable decision is informed largely by my discomfort with the recent appointment of a quasi-military administration to run the affairs of a modern State like ours,” he wrote.

“I find it difficult to work with the current setting, as doing so would amount to a tacit and naïve acquiescence,” he wrote.
George, who served 16 years as a magistrate and has 22 years of legal experience, said he could no longer serve under a system he believes runs contrary to the democratic values of the judiciary.
He described the current administration as “alien” to the ideals of justice and governance, stressing that such a system does not align with the principles legal professionals are sworn to uphold.
