A group of opposition lawmakers is raising alarm about what they describe as the party’s slow collapse from within.
The coalition, led by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives from Imo State, said on Thursday that two PDP governors and 40 federal lawmakers are preparing to leave the party. They believe the wave of defections is a result of poor leadership and internal betrayal.
Instead of simply blaming outside forces, the coalition is now turning the spotlight on PDP’s own top figures, calling them out for allegedly failing to save the party. They particularly named Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike; acting party chairman, Umar Damagum; and the party’s former national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, accusing them of working against PDP from within.
According to Ugochinyere, “This is not just about APC trying to weaken PDP. This is about PDP leaders helping them do it by standing aside while the party falls apart.”
The lawmaker said in his speech that the party’s founding fathers would be heartbroken if they were alive to witness the current state of the party, once Africa’s biggest opposition. He described the PDP today as a “political dog that barks but can’t bite.”
The coalition is demanding urgent action from the PDP’s National Working Committee. They want Damagum replaced with someone from North Central Nigeria, as the party’s rules require. They also want Wike and Anyanwu expelled from the party, claiming they have done more harm than good.
