As Nigeria would be marking Workers’ Day on May 1st, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, made strong remarks about the situation in Rivers State, saying workers there are unhappy, therefore, NLC will not allow the state administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas to take the salute meant for workers.
Speaking in clear terms to Symfoni, Ajaero said, “In Rivers State, the NLC will not stand by and let the administrator take the salute. This is a democracy, not a military rule. Such actions are unacceptable.”
Ngige warned that if the current situation in Rivers continues, things could get worse. “It could even lead to something more serious if workers come out in anger,” he added.

The NLC Chairman also criticized the Rivers State administrator for what he called anti-worker policies. According to him, since the administrator came into office, he has stopped the payment of pensions and gratuities to retired workers.
Ngige said the NLC wants to take control of the situation in Rivers State and will not be carried away by the usual May Day celebrations. “We want to focus on the real issues affecting workers in Rivers, not just the frenzy of May Day,” he said.
