‘Don’t Give Up on Democracy’ – Atiku Urges Nigerian Youths to Keep Voting Despite Flawed Elections

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has called on Nigerian youths not to lose faith in the country’s democratic system, despite what he described as the continuous theft of elections by the ruling party.

Atiku gave the charge on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving a delegation of PDP Grassroots Supporters from the FCT, led by Ambassador Akin Akinleye. The group visited him to express its interest in joining forces with the new political coalition being formed by opposition forces ahead of 2027.

Speaking at the meeting, Atiku decried the low voter turnout during the 2023 general elections, despite Nigeria having over 90 million registered voters. He noted that less than 30 million participated in the polls, a trend he believes could change if young Nigerians remain engaged.

“It is imperative that they show up to vote because it is about their future,” Atiku emphasized.

He acknowledged that the elections in recent years have not truly reflected the will of the people but stressed that disengagement is not the solution.

“Although elections keep being stolen and do not reflect the choice of the people, citizens should continue to come out to cast their votes during elections,” he said.

Earlier, Atiku also received the Sardaunan Matasa Forum (Kano Chapter), a group of young businessmen from the North West led by Alhaji Babangida Abubakar Sani. The delegation expressed concern over the harsh economic environment caused by the current administration’s policies, which they say are stifling businesses.

In his response, Atiku assured the forum of his continued commitment to economic growth through private-sector leadership, citing his track record during the Obasanjo administration between 1999 and 2007.

“With my experience in galvanizing a robust private sector-led economic growth, I am empowered and ready to lead another push for a prosperous nation,” he said.
