Detained activist Omoyele Sowore has condemned the Nigerian Police and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over his arrest and treatment in custody
Speaking during an unplanned media appearance, Sowore alleged that he was attacked around 6:00 a.m. the previous day and has since been denied proper medical attention.
“I knew the next thing they would do is bring the press to create the impression that I’m doing fine. There is no basis for my arrest or the attack in the first place,” he said. “No citizen should be arrested simply because the IGP feels threatened by the legality of my actions.”
He described the situation as evidence that “Nigeria is being run by headless people,” insisting that the authorities should “swallow their pride, release me, apologize, and allow me to get proper treatment.”
According to Sowore, the police had “not been able to bring a doctor” but “instead brought the media,” which he called part of “the nonsense” by the IGP and others.
“This is the height of foolishness by the IGP and the President of Nigeria,” he added. “I am ashamed of the President because under his watch Nigeria has become this kind of foolish theatre.”

Sowore said he told the Commissioner of Police who facilitated the media visit that “he didn’t need to subject himself to this,” and declared, “The Nigerian Police have no integrity — that’s why they brought the media here.“
