UPDATED: Sowore Arrested Over Criminal Offences; No Torture in Police Custody – Nigeria Police Clarifies

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, over what it described as credible allegations of criminal offences.

In a statement issued on Friday, August 8, 2025, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said Sowore was being investigated for offences including forgery, cyberstalking, and other related crimes.

According to the Police, the arrest followed due process, with Sowore informed of the charges against him and released on bail within the 48-hour constitutional timeframe. He is expected to appear in court soon.

The Police also denied reports that Sowore was tortured while in custody, insisting that the Force operates a zero-tolerance policy for torture in line with Nigerian law and international human rights standards.

The statement addressed a viral image showing Sowore with a bandaged arm, claiming it was part of his personal belongings before his arrest. It added that two separate medical teams were sent to examine him on August 7 and 8, but Sowore declined both times.

Police said his detention is based on a valid court order and urged the public and media to avoid spreading false or sensational reports.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to protecting human rights, respecting the rule of law, and ensuring no one is above the law,” the statement concluded
