Abuja, August 25, 2025 -The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP NEC) has confirmed Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party, effective today, until the party’s elective National Convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15–16, 2025.
Rising from its 102nd meeting in Abuja on Monday, NEC expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness across party organs, chapters, and structures ahead of the forthcoming convention. It also commended the efforts of the PDP Governors’ Forum, the Board of Trustees (BoT), the National Assembly Caucus, and the National Working Committee (NWC) in working towards the success of the exercise.
On zoning, NEC approved the recommendations of the National Convention Zoning Committee, which retained all existing national offices in their current regions. Importantly, the party resolved that while the National Chairman remains in the North, its 2027 Presidential ticket has been zoned to the South.

The committee further directed each region to immediately micro-zone positions within its jurisdiction in preparation for the convention.
NEC also received updates from the PDP Constitution Amendment Committee and directed that the draft amendments be circulated to all organs and chapters of the party for further input.
In a strong statement against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), NEC condemned what it described as “state capture” through intimidation, inducement, and militarization during recent bye-elections, especially in Kaduna, Taraba, and Zamfara States. The party accused the APC of plotting to drag Nigeria towards a totalitarian one-party state, warning that such tendencies pose a “clear and present danger” to democracy and national unity.
Reaffirming its commitment to democracy and the protection of citizens’ interests, PDP assured Nigerians that it is repositioning to reclaim power in 2027.
NEC fixed its next meeting for Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
