Port Harcourt, Rivers State, August 30, 2025 – Former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara will formally resume office on September 18, 2025, following the successful conduct of the local government elections in the state.
Wike, who spoke after monitoring the polls across several local government areas, described the exercise as peaceful, orderly, and a vital step in restoring grassroots democracy in Rivers State.
He dismissed narratives of widespread irregularities, insisting that challenges in a handful of polling units could not invalidate an election conducted in more than 7,000 units across the state.

“You don’t judge an election by what happens in one or two polling units in a commercial city. Out of more than 7,000 units, you may have pockets of issues, but overall the process was free, fair, and peaceful,” Wike stated.
He further commended security agencies for maintaining law and order, while applauding voters for turning out in large numbers despite delays in some polling stations.
According to Wike, the conclusion of the polls clears the path for Rivers State to return to normal political order, as the tenure of the State Administrator winds down.
“With this process, the coast is now clear for duly elected representatives to assume leadership at the local government level. By September 18, Governor Fubara and the State House of Assembly will return fully to their constitutional duties,” he declared.
